How to Improve the Working Efficiency of Frame Filter Presses

Date: Sep. 18, 2021

The frame filter press is a critical piece of water treatment equipment, widely adopted across Europe and the Americas. Enhancing the operational efficiency of plate and frame filter presses remains a key concern for many users. This article outlines several effective strategies to boost performance.

1. Feed Size Impacts Work Efficiency

In some sand washing or coal preparation plants, centrifuges and other auxiliary equipment operate in conjunction with filter presses to establish a closed-circuit process for material recovery and screening. When the screening and washing system operates coarsely, part of the thickener underflow can be strategically directed to the centrifuge to recover coarse materials. The resulting centrifuged liquid is then returned to the filter press as feed. This approach optimizes the particle size distribution entering the filter press and improves its overall working conditions.

2. Feed Concentration Impacts Operational Efficiency

Theoretically, a higher feed concentration for the results in shorter cycle times, thereby sustaining greater processing capacity. This approach helps achieve optimal cake moisture levels and lower solid content in the filtrate. However, excessively high underflow concentrations can pose risks to the safe and stable operation of the thickener. Therefore, Longding Environmental Technology recommends maintaining the feed concentration within the range of 400–600 g/L. This ensures that both the required feed density for the and the normal operation of the thickener (specifically, the high-efficiency deep cone thickener) are effectively maintained.

3. Feeding Pressure Impacts Operational Efficiency

Feed pressure is the primary driving force in the process. Higher feed pressure generally results in faster filtration speeds. However, excessive pressure can accelerate equipment wear. Therefore, during the initial feeding stage of a plate and frame , it is recommended to maintain low pressure with high flow rates. The pressure during this phase should be controlled between 0.11–0.12 MPa. Failure to do so may cause premature exhaustion of the filtration cycle, negatively affecting subsequent stages such as cake formation and discharge. After operating for a certain period, the pressure during the main filtration stage can be increased to 0.149–0.159 MPa, but must not exceed 0.18 MPa. This prevents damage to the filter plates and frames while avoiding unnecessary strain on the feed pump.

4. Inspection and Daily Maintenance During Operation

The crimping area of the near the filter cloth in a plate and frame must remain flat. If wrinkles appear, the filter cloth may be damaged or mud leakage may occur. To prevent filter cloth damage and subsequent mud leakage, ensure that no foreign objects or large sludge particles are trapped between the filter cloth and the filter plate during equipment installation.

In addition to the above details, LZZG technical engineers remind you to pay attention to the following points.

(1) Check the firmness of all joints and components before starting the machine. Conduct regular insulation and reliability tests on electronic control systems. If electrical components cause inaccurate or insensitive actions, stop the machine immediately and notify an engineer for prompt repair or replacement.

(2) Regularly inspect the pull plate, sprocket, chain, bearing, piston rod, and other components to ensure mating parts remain clean, stable, and fully functional.

(3) Inspect the seals of the hydraulic system, including all components and connection interfaces. If the plate-and-frame filter press has been idle for an extended period, thoroughly clean the filter plates, wash and dry the filter cloths, expose the piston rod, and apply grease to the integrated block.

Ensure all components are in proper working order before operating the filter press. Perform timely cleaning and maintenance after each use to significantly enhance operational efficiency.
