Trommel Screen Equipment in the Sand and Gravel Industry

Date: Jan. 20, 2022

With the rapid development of the sand and gravel industry this year, trommel screen equipment has become an indispensable solution for material processing. Widely applied in mixing plants, road and bridge engineering, construction sites, quarries, and other sectors, it delivers superior screening and filtering performance when integrated with other systems. Key advantages include anti-clogging screen apertures, stable operation, low noise levels, a simple structure, and convenient maintenance. The enclosed screening cylinder facilitates effective dust collection and sealing, ensuring high overall machine reliability with minimal initial investment. Boasting high screening efficiency and extended service life, it remains the most widely adopted equipment for material classification.

Working Principle of the Shaftless Trommel

The roller device is installed on the frame at an incline and features a non-central shaft structural design. The motor drives the pinion gear to mesh with the drum’s large gear or chain, or the motor drives the chain directly; alternatively, the drum rests on two rollers driven by the motor. The drum rotates under the action of the drive system. As material enters the drum, its inclination and rotation cause the material on the screen surface to tumble and roll, allowing qualified materials to discharge through the outlet at the bottom rear end of the drum. Qualified materials exit via the drum-end discharge port. The tumbling and rolling action within the drum also ejects material stuck in the screen holes, preventing blockage.

Shaftless Trommel

The shaftless trommel screen is primarily designed for the grading of belt-shaped and highly entangled materials. It is widely applied across various production industries, including power generation, mining, metallurgy, building materials, and chemicals. This equipment is frequently used to classify refractory materials, coal, fertilizers, and rocks in sand processing operations. Additionally, it effectively screens viscous and wet materials such as coal, coke, white ash, and placer gold ore, ensuring a more uniform product structure that meets specific production requirements.

Composition of the Shaft Trommel

The system comprises a power unit, roller assembly, frame structure, support wheel system, and feed inlet assembly.

Working Principle of the Shaft Trommel

The roller device is mounted obliquely on the frame. The motor drives the roller device to rotate around its axis via a reducer and coupling. As material enters the drum, the combination of tilt and rotation causes the material on the screening surface to tumble and roll. This action allows qualified materials to discharge through the outlet at the bottom rear end of the drum, while unqualified materials exit through the drum’s end discharge port. The tumbling motion within the drum also helps eject any material stuck in the screen openings, effectively preventing clogging.

Shaft Trommel Applications

1) In quarries, it is used for classifying stones by size and separating soil from stone powder.

2) It is utilized for sand and rock separation in sand and gravel yards.

3) In the coal industry, it is used for separating lump coal from pulverized coal and for coal washing.

4) In the chemical and mineral processing industries, it is used to classify large and small lumps and separate powdery materials.
